Available camping facilities

► Wagoner: Tent or paddle-in camping; group camping

The Wagoner access area has a “walk-in” tent campground that is also open for paddle-in camping. This camping area offers bathroom facilities with hot showers. Campers may pack and carry supplies on a short walk from the parking lot or paddle to the sites.

This area also has a group campsite that can accommodate up to 35 campers. The group site must be reserved beforehand.

► Wagoner: Backpack and group backpack camping at Peaks

The Peaks camping area is accessible through Wagoner access via the Riverbend Trail. This area offers two backpack sites along the mountain base, which is relatively undisturbed and will provide campers with solitude and seclusion. Site #61 is a 1.5-mile hike from the Wagoner parking area, and site #62 is a 2-mile hike.

Backpack campers must register and pay for the campsites prior to hiking to the site. A self-registration box is located at the intersection of Riverbend Trail and the Fern Nature Trail.

The Peaks camping area also has a group backpack campsite that can accommodate up to 12 campers and is located 2.5 miles from the trailhead.

The Riverbend Trail continues on to Riverbend access for additional backpack sites (please see below).

► Riverbend: Paddle-in or backpack camping

The Riverbend camping area has four campsites that can be reached by paddling to the area or backpacking from Wagoner access. Backpackers have a 3.5-mile moderate to strenuous hike on the Riverbend Trail to reach the campsites. All campers, whether they are backpacking or paddling, must check in at Wagoner access.

Small campfires are permitted in the rock fire rings and all trash must be carried out. There is a pit toilet, but no drinking water.

► U.S. 221: Tent or paddle-in camping

The “walk-in” campground has 14 tent campsites and a group campsite. Campers may park at the parking area and carry supplies on a short walk to their site, or paddle to their site. This camping area also offers bathroom facilities with hot showers and potable water.

► U.S. 221: Tent, trailer, and RV camping

The “drive-in” campground has 20 campsites that can accommodate tents, trailers, or RVs. Ten campsites have full hookups (electric, water, and sewer) for RVs — two of which are wheelchair accessible. The other ten campsites have electric hookups only. This camping area also offers bathroom facilities with hot showers, a dump station, and potable water.

► Prather’s Creek: Paddle-in camping ONLY

Prather’s Creek offer the true primitive experience, as these campsites are accessible only by paddling. All trash must be carried out.

There are four primitive campsites, available by reservation only. There are no toilet facilities or drinking water at this access.

► Alleghany: Paddle-in camping ONLY

Alleghany access offers eight primitive campsites and one group campsite, all accessible only by paddling.

All trash must be carried out. This access has a pit toilet and drinking water.

Important information

Check-in and check-out times

Check-in at New River State Park is 3:00 pm and check-out is at 11:00 am.

Some parks can accommodate early check-in or late check-out, depending on the reservation schedule and site availability. Please contact the park to make such arrangements: new.river@ncparks.gov or 336-982-2587.

Amenities

Not all campsites have identical amenities. Read the campsite information on the reservations website to see photos of campsites; check availability and fees; find out whether a specific site is wheelchair accessible, has access to water, bathhouses or pit toilets, or has RV hookups; and learn other important information.

Gate Access

Park gates are closed and locked at posted closing times for your protection. There will be no exiting or entering the gates after the closing time. All visitors who are not spending the night need to be out by closing time.

If you leave the park and do not return before closing time, you will not be able to re-enter. Check with the park during office hours for the after-hours emergency phone number.

Changes and cancellations

You can now cancel reservations online by logging into your account on the reservations website. Please note that there is a $6 fee per night to cancel a reservation. The fees will be deducted from your refund.

If you need to make changes to your reservation, please call the reservation number at 1-877-722-6762. You cannot switch dates, campsites, or parks using your account online — you will be charged the cancellation fees, even if you book a new site.

In the event of a closure of a campsite, campground, or the entire park, you will be contacted automatically by the reservations system to cancel or change your reservation. You will receive a full refund for cancellations due to park closures.
